Help and advice

Answers to common questions about our service, plus practical tips on choosing and working with a domestic cleaner.

Frequently asked questions

Will I have the same cleaner every week?

Yes. We will arrange for you to interview your prospective cleaner and once you are comfortable with a particular person, they will come to you every time. However, you are free to change your cleaner whenever you feel it is necessary.

How do you select your cleaners?

We select our cleaners through a careful interview process, asking a series of questions to assess their reliability, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. We review their work history, experience and references, while getting to know them personally during the interview. We look for individuals who take pride in their work, show initiative and understand the importance of attention to detail. Most importantly, we value the ability to adapt to each client's individual needs, as we recognise that every home and customer has different cleaning preferences and expectations.

How do you vet your cleaners?

We ensure the cleaners have a permanent address in their own name. The cleaners are interviewed at their home address, where documents to establish proof of identity are also recorded. In addition, cleaners are photographed and references verified.

Are your cleaners insured?

Our cleaners work on a self-employed basis. We do not say that a cleaner is insured unless we have confirmed it separately in writing. Our own agency insurance covers our administrative operations only. It does not cover damage or loss arising from a cleaner’s work, which is dealt with directly between you and your cleaner. Please see our Terms of Business for more detail.

What happens if I do not get on with my cleaner?

You are free to change your cleaner whenever you feel it is necessary. If you are not happy with the cleaning, tell your cleaner promptly or contact us, and we will try to introduce a replacement. Replacements normally take one or two business days, although we cannot guarantee immediate cover or the same rate, schedule or tasks.

Do I have to commit to regular cleaning?

There is no commitment until you sign our Terms of Agreement, so you can meet or trial your cleaner first. After signing there is a minimum period of 12 weeks, then we require 28 days’ written notice.

Who pays the cleaner?

You pay the cleaner directly, at the agreed rate, on the day they work.

What do I do if the cleaner does not turn up?

Let us know as soon as possible and we will arrange for the work to be covered.

Can the cleaner come when I am at work?

Yes. A large proportion of our clients are at work when the cleaner comes to work. The cleaner will hold a set of keys.

What services do you provide?

We provide regular cleaning, on a weekly basis, or one off cleans. Our cleaners will do your general housework, which includes chores such as dusting, vacuum cleaning, polishing, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, and washing floors. They will also do your ironing.

What areas do you cover?

We cover the HA, UB, WD, NW and TW postcode areas, and we now also cover parts of Surrey around Woking, Weybridge and Chobham (GU and KT postcodes). The cleaner we provide will live locally to you. For a full list of areas and postcodes, please see our areas covered page.

Can you provide references from some of your clients?

Yes. Over the years we have received many testimonials from our clients, some of which can be viewed on this site.

Can I specify the day and time that the cleaner comes?

Yes. We are here to match your needs as accurately as possible.

How long will it take to find a cleaner?

We aim to find a suitable cleaner for you within a couple of days. Very often it can be done on the same day.

Who is responsible for providing the cleaning products and materials?

The cleaner will use your cleaning products and materials. We appreciate that you will know best which products suit your home.

Are there any restrictions placed on the cleaner?

Our cleaners will do your general housework, which encompasses chores within the home and does not include, for example, the cleaning of outside windows. There are no other specific restrictions placed on a cleaner, but they do not undertake any work they consider unsafe.

Is there a minimum number of hours per visit?

The minimum is 2 hours per visit.

Do you provide transport for the cleaners?

No. This is not necessary, as the cleaner will live locally to you.

How do I book a cleaner?

Just pick up the phone and give us a call on 020 8869 1144. Alternatively, email us with your requirements and a contact telephone number.

Cleaning tips: 10 things to know before taking on a cleaner

If you are considering taking on a domestic cleaner then there are things you should learn about them before you engage someone to come into your house to clean.

1. Have they cleaned for anyone else?

Experience in some previous cleaning should mean there is less of a learning curve to meet your particular cleaning needs. It should also mean they are comfortable in doing this sort of work.

2. Do they have references?

If they have done some cleaning previously then it should be possible to obtain a reference from a former or current satisfied customer. If they have worked previously and there are no references then this should put you on enquiry and perhaps move on to the next applicant. However, there will be people applying for work who have not worked recently, perhaps due to having a work break whilst raising children. They may prove suitable depending on the impression they give you of their eagerness to work.

3. Are they legally entitled to work?

With so many overseas visitors and people here for many different reasons from countries around the world, you should not assume that someone applying for work is legally entitled to work. You may need to see a passport, and if it is not issued by an E.U. member country, you should note any work permit or lack thereof, or ask to see a national insurance number. If you are not sure if someone is legally entitled to work, bear in mind that a fine of up to £5000 can be imposed for employing a person who does not have the right to work.

4. Will there be a language problem?

How will you make known your needs if you cannot understand each other? Perhaps just as importantly you need to be able to say what should not be done and what cleaning products are not to be used, for example on surfaces you know to be delicate.

5. Can they work during the school holidays?

If your cleaner has children they may only want to work during school term time. However, you may want your home cleaned every week!

6. Where do they live and how long have they lived there?

If you are going to give someone the run of your house it is advisable to know your cleaner has a stable home life at a permanent address. Do you want someone who is constantly changing their address and who may disappear at any time?

7. Will they work when you want?

Many people find that they have to tidy up or in some way prepare before the cleaner comes, or you may need to stay in to let the cleaner in. You may not find it convenient to have the cleaner change their day at the last moment.

8. Will they do the work you want?

You need to be sure that your domestic cleaner will do the cleaning duties you decide on. Some cleaners have fixed ideas about both how things will be done and what they are prepared to do. This might not coincide with your requirements, so discuss these at the outset.

9. Can you meet them for an interview?

Some cleaners will assume they can turn up and start. Ideally you will arrange to see a cleaner for a chat before they come round and expect to work. This will then enable you to cover the points above in an informal way.

10. Will they do a trial clean?

Whilst you may have satisfied yourself as to the credentials and apparent willingness to work, the final proof will be in the quality of their work. What is acceptable to one person may be shoddy to another. Arrange for the cleaner to do a clean so that you can both see if your expectations coincide.

If all this seems too much to be bothered with, then there are domestic cleaning companies who specialise in providing cleaners. They should have carried out all the checks and will also be able to provide an alternate or replacement cleaner when you require one.
